About Me

My photo
Irma Carolina Rubio
I was born on the arid dusty plains of Lubbock, TX, to very loving Mexican immigrant parents. Thankfully, the sky was so infinite and stunning, that it was easy to dream. Vertically, mostly—up, up, up with wind and birds, where there were new ways of being and of seeing. I completed a BFA in Visual Studies w/ K-12 Art Certification (2001) from Texas Tech University, and a MAAE (2004) in Art Education from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After ten years of cultural work as artist and art educator at museums, public schools, grass-roots community arts organizations, and galleries in Chicago, IL, and San Antonio, TX, I decided to forge a new path as a graduate student in the Ph.D. in Art Education program at The Pennsylvania State University. This is my first year in the program. I would like to emerge with a genuinely integrated identity as active feminist researcher, activist, artist, visionary and educator. I just hope I don’t get too frightened along the way--that I have enough compassion, humility, and devotion. Sometimes this work requires a myriad of inner earthquakes, torrential rain, and borderland caniculas.
